Untitled (Tape Composition #) is a public composition using audio cassettes as the primary source of sound. The project consists of manipulating audio cassette tapes into short 8 second audio cassette loops which are then handed out to the public (a tape recorded is provided if the participant does not have access to a tape recorder).
The participants are informed that they can record whichever sounds they wish to loop on to a cassette tape.
Rules:
-After a time of about 6 months the sounds are all brought together and published as a new composition number is assigned to the title and is presented in the form of a sound installation. (exampled #1- for the first publication, #2 - for the second publication, ect.)
-Eleven though twenty pairs of cassette deck and stereo recievers are used to play the composition.
-At the begining of each day the cassettes’ are changed at random.
-If a cassette player has difficulty playing a selected cassette, the assistant changing it is allowed to replace it with another cassette on the wall until the player is able to be in the play position.
-The composition’s duration is based on the duration of the exhibition.
-Each cassette acts like a performer of an orchestra and each day could be considered as different sections in a movement.
-Though the use of the cassette tapes, they will individually begin to break down and even fall apart.
-On some cassettes the magnetic strip will come off of the plastic tape, on others the tape used for holding the tape together will give out.
-These tapes are not excluded from the randomized selection of each morning.
-Chance will determaine whether or not the cassettes will cause harmony or chaos. Eventually time will only allow silence to be the only sound heard.
